Introduction to Beekeeping with Roger Moss will return this Fall on Wednesday, September 9th and September 16th from 7 pm to 8 pm on Zoom. A hands-on workshop will take place on September 16th in the Riverview Community Garden.

Urban beekeeping is an important practice, and Jersey City has many beekeepers.
You can find beehives in community gardens, backyards and on some rooftops. There’s also a very informative honeybee exhibit at Liberty Science Center.
Riverview Community Garden will offer a free introductory course to members. Two sessions will be conducted on Zoom in order to share written materials – this is the historical and biological background needed to understand how beekeeping has been done in the past, and why what we’ve learned is enhanced by our modern scientific understanding of the honeybee.
Following the study sessions, we will meet at Riverview Community Garden and put on protective clothing to safely open hives, observe bees at work, inspect the status of the brood chamber, the honey frames, and form a strategy for maintaining a healthy and productive hive.
By the end of the session, you will be able to:
Describe the conditions of a honeybee colony;
Identify any conditions which require further action;
Summarize whether the colony is set to thrive through the warm seasons and prepared with sufficient honey to eat over the cold seasons.
